A Guide to Exploring Astronomy in Your Homeschool

Astronomy is a great science topic to explore in your homeschool that requires little to no special equipment: just use your eyes on a clear night! I recommend this free SkyView app for help identifying any points of interest you might spot during your stargazing.

To more easily guide your family in your astronomy adventure, I have created this schedule, available in my Teachers Pay Teachers store! This is an 8-week literature-based notebooking study that uses free resources and videos from around the web.

Most information in this study will be gleaned from various books. A great deal of these books should be available in your local library. If not, it’s fine to skip them, or pick a book of your choice to fill the space. The only exception to this is the following book. It is necessary for the entire length of the study.

The Usborne Internet-Linked Book of Astronomy & Space

Optional Supplies

A few supplies you may want to purchase to have on hand (but are not absolutely necessary!)

To supplement this study, I have created notebooking pages that follow along with the suggested schedule. These pages are available here on my Teachers Pay Teacher shop. They can help add a little color to your student’s notebook.

Prisms are fun to play with when discussing light and the electromagnetic spectrum. This one worked well for our family and came in it’s own special case, without breaking the bank. If you don’t want to purchase a prism, a simple glass and a sunny window works fine.

telescope would be a nice addition for this study to aid in stargazing. Many are available online with several different features and accessories.

If your budget doesn’t allow for a telescope, a good pair of binoculars may work well. The encyclopedia used in this study recommends 7×35 or 10×50 for beginners.

Happy Homeschooling, friends!
