Exploring Ancient Egypt in Your Homeschool

Ancient Egypt is one of my favorite topics to explore with my kids! Not only is there a plethora of resources, books, and activities to engage with, the land of the Nile seems to always easily capture childrens’ attention and imagination.

Our family has studied ancient Egypt several times over the years, using Story of the World volume 1 as our guide. If you own the activity guide, you already know about all the amazing projects it has for the chapters on Egypt (mummified chicken, anyone?). Even without SOTW to direct you, I have collected some excellent resources.

Books

Here are a few of my family’s favorite books about ancient Egypt…

Activities

While most of our family’s favorite ancient Egypt activties originated in the Story of the World volume 1 Activity Guide, I also found many ideas online. I’ve created a Pinterest board featuring maps, crafts, workpages, and unit studies. Be sure to check it out!

This toy, in particular, kept my kids busy for ages and ended up featuring prominently in our all our Nile models.

A New Resource

As a supplement to our study of ancient Egypt, we have greatly enjoyed The Golden Goblet, by Eloise Jarvis McGraw. This book makes a fantastic read-aloud, or even an independent read for the middle grades.
To aid with comprehension, a new resource is availabe in the My Island Homeschool store.

This PDF packet contains comprehension questions for all 16 chapters of the book. There are 5-9 questions for each chapter, guiding the student through the story in a simple, but supportive way. Lines are provided for students to write their answer after each question. An answer key is provided at the end of the packet, which includes the page numbers where the answer appears in the book.

Happy homeschooling, friends!
